The failure to take over Kyiv has prompted Moscow to shift focus elsewhere.

On Friday, Russian military forces launched missiles at a civilian train station in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk. Over 57 Ukrainian citizens were killed in this attack. Following this, on Sunday, another series of attacks was carried out in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Finally, a new Russian military convoy has taken form with a presumed destination of Ukraine’s southeastern territories.

All of these attacks have led Ukrainian officials to believe that Russia is focusing their military efforts more toward their eastern border, and especially toward civilian areas, after their failed takeover of the capital city of Kyiv.

“The enemy has almost finished preparation for [an] assault on the east, the attack will begin soon,” Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, a spokesman for Ukraine’s defense ministry, said today.

“Russian troops will move to even larger operations in the east of our state,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a public address on Sunday. “But we are preparing for their actions. We will respond.”

Roughly 13,400 Ukrainian citizens have been evacuated from the eastern territories since the Kramatorsk attack on Friday, though the Ukrainian government has leveled multiple accusations against the Russian military for deliberately attacking their evacuation corridors, making this process more difficult.
