The summer ethanol ban may be temporarily lifted.
Gasoline prices are still on the rise in the United States as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine, disrupting the global supply and flow of oil. These rising prices have served as a wake-up call for not just the US, but many other first-world countries that energy independence is becoming a much more pressing concern.
“The President believes that the actions of a dictator half a world away should not impact what families pay at the pump here at home,” reads a White House memo obtained by CNN.
In an effort to drop gas prices, President Joe Biden is slated to announce a temporary emergency waiver on the sale of E15 gasoline, which contains a blend of 15% ethanol. This kind of gasoline is usually prohibited from sale during the summer months due to concerns about air quality impact. If implemented, this waiver could save US drivers at least 10 cents per gallon of fuel. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency will be ramping up efforts to improve and expand the national usage of more sustainable biofuels over foreign energy imports.
“Today’s actions also reinforce the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of achieving real energy independence and commitment to a long-term strategy to spur smart development and adoption of sustainable, homegrown fuels,” the memo added.
