Users suspect the price hike is a deliberate clap-back from Elon Musk.

This morning, the official Twitter Twitter account announced that after a period of inactivity, the site will be relaunching its controversial Twitter Blue subscription service. As with before, those who subscribe to the service for the $8 monthly cost will receive prioritized posting, less ads, be able to post longer videos, and of course, receive the infamous blue checkmark on their profile.

However, in addition to this, an amendment has been made: those looking to use Twitter Blue from an iOS device like an iPhone will have to pay $3 extra to subscribe to the service. A precise reason for this price hike was not given in the announcement post, though users suspect it to be a deliberate clap-back from owner Elon Musk against Apple. Apps on the Apple App Store, Twitter included, are required to pay a 30% commission fee, so it’s likely the price hike is meant to offset this.

Another major change is that the verification process that comes with paying for the blue checkmark will actually include a review step in order to prevent users from making an account in the name of existing people and brands. This step was necessitated after the initial implementation of Twitter Blue, wherein users were able to verify themselves as various prolific people and companies and post whatever they wanted.
