Marisa Fotieo isolated in the bathroom for nearly five hours.

Over the holiday weekend, Marisa Fotieo, a school teacher from Michigan, was traveling to Reykjavik, Iceland on an Iceland Air flight. Midway through the flight, she began to experience pains in her throat, so out of an abundance of caution, she used a coronavirus rapid test kit that she had in her carry-on bag. After a moment, the test came back positive, indicating that she may have been infected with COVID-19.

“There’s 150 people on the flight, and my biggest fear was giving it to them,” Fotieo said in an interview with USA Today.

To protect the other passengers, and with the crew’s go-ahead, Fotieo isolated herself inside one of the plane’s bathrooms for entire remaining duration of the flight, which she estimated to be about four to five hours. During her stay in the bathroom, she filmed a video of herself, which was later posted to TikTok. While the space was cramped, Fotieo says that the help of one of the flight attendants, Ragnhildur “Rocky” Eiríksdóttir, got her through. Eiríksdóttir checked up on Fotieo regularly throughout the flight, and also provided her with water and snacks.

When the flight landed in Iceland, Fotieo and Eiríksdóttir exchanged Instagram handles, after which Fotieo swiftly resumed self-isolation in her room at the Red Cross hotel. While Fotieo was forced to remain in quarantine for the duration of the holiday weekend, Eiríksdóttir sent her a small LED Christmas tree and some presents to give her some holiday cheer.

In Fotieo’s words, Eiríksdóttir was “truly an angel on this Earth.”
