A plastic straw ban is coming to every restaurant in Los Angeles, and it goes into effect tomorrow.

However, small restaurants aren’t the only eateries that are being affected by this; even fast food joints will have to abide by the terms of the new law.

Worldwide, plastic straws are the no. 1 item that are found amongst ocean trash. That’s why L.A. officials are calling for this ban. If you find yourself at a restaurant in the city, the only way you will be able to receive a plastic straw is if you make a special request for one.

The first part of the ban went into effect earlier this year. Businesses with 26 or more employees have already been practicing the straw ban, but tomorrow smaller restaurants, fast food chains, and even drive-thrus will have to do so, too.

Josh Estrada, a partner for an L.A. restaurant called Beacon, spoke with CBS 2 about complying with the new rules – and then some.

“Aside from that, we’ve also gone through the measures to incorporate paper compostable plates as well as bowls and food trays as kind of your dining items,” said Estrada. “We’ve even changed our cups from completely plastic for both hot and cold items, so no plastic cups whatsoever. We’ve also taken it a step further to remove stir sticks, so we use pasta stir sticks for all of our beverages for mixing.”

Estrada says they’re also now incorporating recyclable napkins into the mix. He adds that the response has been great because people in the community are very in-tune with the new measures and are excited about it.

Tomorrow, city leaders will be out and about to remind restaurant officials about the new changes going into effect.
