Uber is giving LAX some flack after airport officials say they will implement its new passenger pickup system at the end of this month.

Uber officials don’t have high hopes that the system will be effective. Their primary concern is that there won’t be a test run before the new changes go into effect. Starting on Oct. 29, LAX will ban Uber, Lyft and taxis from their terminals. Instead, travelers will have to hop on a shuttle or walk to a parking lot next to Terminal 1 in order to catch a ride to their final destination.

Uber wrote a letter to LAX expressing concern about not having enough spaces at the LAX lot for its drivers, which pick up about 500 riders per hour. LAX says the ultimate goal is to alleviate congestion, but Uber has argued that this is only going to inconvenience its passengers and cause longer wait times.

CBS 2 spoke with some people at LAX who had mixed reactions to the new passenger pickup system.

“I prefer not doing that. I prefer taking Uber or Lyft from the airport because of the convenience, it’s so much easier. After taking a long flight in I would prefer to just jump in my car or jump in an Uber or Lyft,” said passenger Pia Rotman.

“Whatever works best for the airport, you know, to make it easier on everybody. It will probably prove to be quite interesting. We’ll just have to see how it goes,” said rideshare driver Larry Wascovich.

LAX issued a statement saying, “We have requested that Uber share with us any detailed data that differs from our modeling results and substantiates the concerns in their letter, but they have not provided this data to us to date.”

As for Lyft, officials say they will continue to work with LAX to ensure the best possible pickup for its passengers.
