After more than two decades, 207 appearances, 125 goals and a World Cup triumph, Lionel Messi has brought his extraordinary Argentina career to an end.

One of the greatest chapters in international football has officially closed.

Lionel Messi announced his retirement from the Argentina national team on August 31 at the age of 39, ending a remarkable international career that began more than 20 years ago.

The Argentina captain leaves as his country’s record appearance maker and all-time leading scorer, having recorded 125 goals in 207 appearances. His career included the ultimate achievement of lifting the FIFA World Cup in 2022, as well as consecutive Copa Am茅rica titles in 2021 and 2024.

A Difficult Goodbye

Messi confirmed his decision through a personal message shared on social media.

He described retirement as a painful decision but acknowledged that he felt the time had come to step away from international football.

The announcement followed Argentina’s run to the 2026 World Cup final, where they narrowly missed the opportunity to defend their title after losing 1-0 to Spain.

That match ultimately became Messi’s final appearance in Argentina colors.

More Than 20 Years With Argentina

Messi made his senior international debut against Hungary in August 2005 when he was just 18 years old.

The beginning was certainly memorable, although not for the reason he would have wanted. He was sent off shortly after coming onto the field.

What followed was one of the greatest international careers football has ever seen.

Over the next two decades, Messi became the central figure of Argentina’s national team and eventually its captain, carrying the expectations of one of football’s most passionate countries.

Years of Heartbreak Before the Trophies

Messi’s international career wasn’t always filled with celebrations.

For years, one of the biggest criticisms directed toward him was that he had been unable to reproduce Argentina’s biggest successes despite his incredible club career.

There were painful defeats in major finals, including the 2014 World Cup final against Germany and Copa Am茅rica disappointments.

At one point in 2016, the frustration became so intense that Messi briefly announced his retirement from international football.

Thankfully for Argentina supporters, he returned.

Copa Am茅rica Changed Everything

The breakthrough finally arrived in 2021.

Argentina defeated Brazil at the Maracan茫 to win the Copa Am茅rica, giving Messi his first major senior international trophy.

Suddenly, the conversation surrounding his Argentina career began to change.

Three years later, Argentina won the Copa Am茅rica again in 2024, giving Messi consecutive continental titles and further strengthening an already remarkable international record.

Between those two victories came something even bigger.

The World Cup Moment Everyone Remembered

The defining moment of Messi’s international career arrived in Qatar in 2022.

Argentina recovered from a shocking opening defeat against Saudi Arabia to reach the World Cup final, where they faced France.

After one of the most dramatic finals in tournament history, Argentina eventually won on penalties.

Messi finally lifted the World Cup.

For a player who had already won almost everything possible at club and individual level, that trophy completed the missing part of his career.

The Records Tell Their Own Story

Messi retires with 207 appearances and 125 goals for Argentina, both national records.

He also represented Argentina at six World Cups and seven editions of the Copa Am茅rica.

His international achievements include the 2022 World Cup, Copa Am茅rica titles in 2021 and 2024, the 2022 Finalissima and Olympic gold from 2008.

Numbers alone, however, don’t completely explain what Messi came to mean to Argentina.

Argentina Now Looks to the Next Generation

Messi’s departure creates a challenge that goes far beyond replacing one player.

For more than two decades, Argentina’s national team was built around a footballer capable of changing a match with one pass, dribble or finish.

Now players including Juli谩n 脕lvarez and other emerging Argentine talents will have to carry more responsibility as the national team enters a new era.

Messi made it clear that while his time on the field with Argentina is finished, his connection with the national team isn’t.

The End of an Extraordinary Era

There was no second consecutive World Cup trophy to provide the perfect ending.

But Messi no longer needed one.

He leaves international football as a World Cup winner, two-time Copa Am茅rica champion, record scorer, record appearance maker and captain of one of Argentina’s greatest generations.

The teenager who made an unforgettable debut in 2005 eventually became the man who lifted the World Cup for his country.

Twenty-one years later, the No. 10 shirt moves on.

Messi’s place in Argentina’s football history does not.
