It’s going to be another jam-packed July 4 holiday on Coney Island.

From the hot dog eating contest to the beach boardwalk and fireworks, there is plenty for the entire family to enjoy.

Whether you want to play games or go on the iconic rides, take a stroll on the boardwalk or set up shop on the sand, there is no shortage of fun in Coney Island – and no shortage of sun either.

Families took advantage of the great weather and activities to kick off the Fourth of July weekend.

“I have this summer off and I’m about to have a baby so I just want to kick up my feet, relax, and eat a lot of ice cream,” said Fort Greene Resident Adashima Oyo.

In addition to the plethora of ice cream choices you’ll find on Coney Island, you also won’t find a better day to get your hands on a hot dog.

“I might come to Coney Island for the hot dog challenge,” said eight-year-old Rafiatou Diallo.

Today is the Annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. The contestants have already weighed in and are ready to go. Joey Chestnut holds the men’s world record with 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Five-time reigning women’s champion Miki Sudo ate 37 hot dogs last year. She recently shared her secret with CBS New York.

“I’ll typically eat two meats at once, and then while I’m chewing or swallowing, I’ll dunk the bun in warm Crystal Light,” said Sudo.

Some prefer the daytime fun, but a family visiting from Israel said they can’t wait for the classic nighttime spectacular.

“We’re going to try and catch the fireworks, definitely,” said a family member.

The hot dog contest is at 11:00 AM and the fireworks will appear at 9:30 PM.
