Boris Johnson has become the next prime minister elect of Great Britain after being elected as leader of the Conservative Party.

He defeated Jeremy Hunt in the Tory leadership contest.

Johnson is the former mayor of London, and won the election with 66 percent of the vote. According to The Guardian, the voting turnout was 87.4 percent among 159,320 party members.

One of Johnson’s most popular talking points has been Brexit. Johnson mentioned this in his acceptance speech, saying, “We are going to energize the country! We are going to get Brexit done on October 31. We are going to take advantage of all the opportunities that it will bring in a new spirit of can-do.”

Johnson mentioned that as prime minister, he plans to make major improvements to the U.K. including “better education, better infrastructure, more police, fantastic full-fiber broadband sprouting in every household.”

Boris Johnson paid tribute to his predecessor Theresa May and his opponent Jeremy Hunt. US President Donald Trump immediately tweeted, “He will be great!” upon hearing the news of Johnson’s new role as prime minister.

In the final words of his acceptance speech, Johnson said, “the campaign is over and the work begins.”

Prime Minister Johnson will officially take office on Wednesday afternoon.
