Barbara and Florence may be 40 years apart, but that doesn’t matter.

Friendship is a powerful thing; one that feeds the soul. For one Aurora-based 93-year-old woman who was formerly alone in the world, fate intervened when someone came into her life just at the right time.

“We’ve gone to the history museum, butterfly pavilion, the aquarium,” says 53-year-old Barbara Asmussen, a police officer with the Aurora Police Department who investigates thefts and robberies.

Their adventures are boundless and their friendship is unexpected. Barbara met Florence “Corky” Joynes about a year ago when she was working overtime security detail at Wal-Mart.

“I started walking her out to her car,” says Barbara of Corky.

At 93 years old, Corky has been married seven times, but she has no children or family around.

“No matter what age you are, you can still work. And at 90, you can do it if you’ve got a brain that’s working too,” says Corky.

And through it all, she found Barbara. Now, two totally different generations are colliding.

Barbara jokingly asks Corky, “What do you think a nerd is?”

Corky responds, “Somebody that has got too much knowledge and doesn’t know about the everyday things that go on in life.”

Jokes, laughter, and time spent together is what fuels this friendship that has a generational gap.

As fate would have it, these two people seemingly found each other exactly when they were supposed to.

“My mom has passed and my grandma has passed. I call her my adopted grandma. I don’t have anybody, she doesn’t either. This is how we connected,” says Barbara.

“We get to talk and everything, because I don’t have anybody to talk to really, so we get to talk about things in my past or hers,” said Corky.

The message here seems to be loud and clear – friendship has no bounds.
