Burger King is helping its vegetarian customers have a meal “their way.”

A number of Burger King restaurants are using plant-based beef substitutes that are supposed to taste like the real thing. It’s called the Impossible Whopper.

Burger King is best known for its beefy Whopper, but now the fast food giant is offering an alternative – a flame-broiled version that contains no meat. It’s now available nationwide.

The Impossible Whopper’s patty is a plant-based Whopper that looks like beef.

Henry Gonzalez, a Burger King patron, tried both the Whopper and the Impossible Whopper.

“As far as flavor, it tastes the same. It’s just as good I would have to say,” said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez says that if someone set the burger in front of him and said it was a regular one, he’d believe them.

The burger is the creation of Impossible Foods, which uses soy and potato protein along with other ingredients. Another company, Beyond Meat, does something similar.

A number of restaurants are now getting in on the meatless movement, from Carl’s Jr. to Little Caesars.

The Impossible Whopper costs a dollar more than the traditional Whopper. Burger King is currently the largest outlet offering the meatless product, but it likely won’t be the last. Demand is growing and the sales of plant-based foods are up more than a billion dollars in the past two years.

“I think we are going to see more restaurants offering this, and I really think it’s going to take shape in other types of menu items beyond just burgers, tacos and pizza,” said Mintel’s Foodservice Research Analyst Amanda Topper.

Food vloggers Crystal Pang and Amanda Schaible came for the Impossible Whopper because they don’t eat meat.

“It’s delicious! I love it. It’s like meaty, without any of the meat,” said Pang.

The meat-free burger has almost the same number of calories as the beef version, but that’s not stopping sales.

The Impossible Whopper has six grams less fat and less cholesterol than the original beef burger, but it does have 18 percent more carbohydrates.
