Cardi B had a historic win at the 2019 Grammys: she is the first woman to win for best rap album. But with the big wins come the big haters. People were quick to jump on social media and complain about Cardi’s win. Many felt the award should have gone to Mac Miller, who passed away just months ago. The response was so harsh, in fact, that it drove Cardi to remove herself from Instagram.

After seeing the negative response from some corners, others came out in support of the rapper, like another one of the artists in the same category, rapper Pusha T. Lady Gaga also spoke out for Cardi, saying that she deserved the award and that music fans should “support her.”

One high profile source of criticism of the award was from Ariana Grande, Mac Miller’s ex-girlfriend. When Cardi’s name was announced during the ceremony, Ariana tweeted “trash”, follow by “literal bulls—“. She later deleted the tweets and tried to explain that it had nothing to do with Cardi specifically but how the Grammys had handled Mac Miller’s parents at the ceremony. It seems likely that a lot of the backlash- even beyond Grande- has more to do with raw emotions over the still-fresh loss of Mac Miller than with any problem with Cardi B.

It appears that Cardi’s hiatus from Instagram was short-lived, however, because she recently reappeared just in time to promote a new song with Bruno Mars.
