Disagreements over a brief LGBTQ reference have paused the film’s distribution.

The newest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is slated to premier in theaters worldwide in the next week. However, one country has run into an issue with the film that, while minor by their own admission, has stopped its distribution in that area almost entirely.

Saudi Arabia’s film board has temporarily halted advance ticket sales of the new Doctor Strange film, with the movie going unlisted in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar. The reason for this is a brief moment in the film when one of the new characters, America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez, mentions having “two moms.” As Saudi Arabia is much more stringent on matters related to LGBTQ representation, they sent a request to Disney to edit this moment out of the foreign cut of the film. Disney, however, has refused.

“It’s just her talking about her moms, because she has two moms,” Nawaf Alsabhan, Saudi Arabia’s general supervisor of cinema classification, explained to the Agence France-Presse. “And being in the Middle East, it’s very tough to pass something like this.”

“We sent it to the distributor, and the distributor sent it to Disney, and Disney has told us they are not willing,” he added.

Rumors have been circulating recently that due to this moment, or possibly other unspecified moments, the film had been banned outright in Saudi Arabia. Alsabhan clarified that the film has not been banned, and that they’re still open to a compromise.

“It will never be banned,” he said. “There’s no reason to ban the film. It’s a simple edit… So far, they have refused. But we haven’t closed the door. We’re still trying.”
