One family in Baltimore is taking a more creative approach when it comes to teaching their daughter how to drive.

14-year-old Eden Sally wants what almost every other teenager her age wants – to finally get behind the wheel of a car. But at her age in Baltimore, she’s still a bit too young to obtain her learner’s permit. Eager to get started with learning, her family has figured out a way to satisfy her desire in both a safe and fun way: a video game.

Microsoft, in partnership with Virtual Driver Interactive, Inc., has introduced a new game for the Xbox One titled Driving Essentials, which has been designed to teach the fundamentals of driving to those who want to learn. The game’s creator mentions that it’s a great way for people like teenagers to realize the different scenarios that can occur as a result of numerous different types of accidents.

Sally says she’s now aware of some of the driving basics that she wasn’t before, like blind spots and navigating around large trucks. She believes this will help her tremendously when it comes time for her actual driving test. Though it’s only a video game, Sally’s father says he appreciates that his daughter is having fun with it, and doesn’t view playing it as something like a chore.
