The fan-favorite Marvel hero will return this holiday season.

Since the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans have been waiting and speculating for the third film in the trilogy, Spider-Man: No Way Home, especially after the major cliffhanger Far From Home ended on. Rumors have abounded for the past two years, bolstered by allusions to the multiverse in the second film, which Marvel is leaning more heavily into with the conclusion of Loki. Today, we finally received the first proper trailer for No Way Home.

Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up almost immediately after the previous film. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has been outed as Spider-Man to the entire world, and despite the support of his friends and family, he can’t take the pressure and scrutiny. As such, he seeks the aid of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who attempts to cast a spell that will wipe the world’s knowledge of Spider-Man. However, Peter accidentally interferes with the spell, resulting in a collapse in reality that not only causes Peter’s own place in it to fluctuate wildly, but summons villains from alternate Spider-Man continuities. The most notable of these villains are the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus, whose appearances are reminiscent of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films from the early 2000s starring Tobey Maguire.

Doc Ock will be portrayed by Alfred Molina, who previously played the villain in the second Sam Raimi Spider-Man film. This casting choice has fans wondering if the other actors from those films will reprise their roles, including Maguire as an alternate Spider-Man or Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin. As of writing, nothing has been confirmed on this front. What we do know is that the events of this film will tie directly into another planned film for the MCU, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will premier in theaters on December 17, 2021.
