The booster causes a major uptick in antibodies according to the company.

Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine has been a bit of an outlier compared to Pfizer and Moderna’s creations, being a single-shot vaccine instead of a two-shot. Due to uncertainty caused by the Delta variant, all of these pharmaceutical companies have been floating the idea of booster shots. But while Johnson & Johnson is no exception, there was a bit of confusion as to how their supposed booster would work in comparison to the other vaccines, which only require another dose of the same. If Johnson & Johnson’s latest findings are to be believed, their booster could be extremely effective in boosting immunity against the coronavirus.

Conducting two phase 2 studies in both the US and Europe, Johnson & Johnson found that a booster shot administered six months after the initial dose of their vaccine causes an impressive uptick in antibodies. “New interim data from these studies demonstrate that a booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine generated a rapid and robust increase in spike-binding antibodies, nine-fold higher than 28 days after the primary single-dose vaccination,” the company said in its statement.

“We have established that a single shot of our COVID-19 vaccine generates strong and robust immune responses that are durable and persistent through eight months. With these new data, we also see that a booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine further increases antibody responses among study participants who had previously received our vaccine,” Dr. Mathai Mammen, global head of research and development for the Janssen vaccine, said in a statement.

Johnson & Johnson is currently in talks with the US Food and Drug Administration, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, European Medicines Agency, World Health Organization, and more over the necessity and viability of this booster shot.

“We look forward to discussing with public health officials a potential strategy for our Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, boosting eight months or longer after the primary single-dose vaccination,” Mammen added.
