The upcoming film will be the last appearance for the team.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the third film in the Guardians trilogy within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is slated to hit theaters some time in 2023. The film will once again feature the full cast, including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel. However, on the heels of rumors that Cooper and Bautista would not be reprising their roles any further after this film, its creator, James Gunn, offered confirmation: this will be the last time we see the Guardians of the Galaxy.

“This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians,” Gunn said in an interview with the Hero Nation podcast. “I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. That’s always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best.”

The third Guardians film will be Gunn’s last project with Marvel and Disney before he shifts focus entirely to his DC projects, including the currently running HBO Max series Peacemaker.

Back in September, Bautista shared his thoughts on the conclusion of his run as Drax the Destroyer in an interview with ComicBook.com. “It’s our third film. We’re going to wrap it up. And it’s been a hell of a journey with a few bumps. So I’m looking forward to this, man. My cast and obviously the director, James Gunn, they’re like family to me. This is kind of where my journey started. It’s come full circle and I’m looking forward to wrapping it up. And it’s a bittersweet… I mean, I’ve been doing Guardians since 2013. And, you know, when this comes out, you know, it’ll be in 2023, so that’s a, you know, 10 year journey.”
