A clever group of students have invented a way to curb vape addiction.

It’s no secret that vaping is becoming one of the most popular methods to get that nicotine fix in. Vapes usually contain flavored nicotine and are highly popular among the younger crowd. And, as they relate to cigarettes, it’s no surprise that vaping has the potential to be extremely addictive.

Five students from Clark High School in Las Vegas, Nevada wanted to find a way to solve the teenage vaping epidemic, especially after seeing so many of their friends become hooked. For them, this presented a perfect opportunity to create change.

According to one of these students, “A lot of our friends right now are addicted to vaping and it’s become a problem over many high schools.”

So… they decided to do something about it. They entered their idea into an international competition called “The Conrad Challenge.” Students from all over the world traveled to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to present their idea in front of NASA members.

The group from Las Vegas became finalists, along with two other teams from Colorado and Nigeria.

This is when they pitched the idea of “VapeMate.” One of the students explained, “What our product does is it counts the amount of nicotine they’ve taken in and the impacts that come along with this.”

VapeMate essentially takes into account the rate at which an individual is ingesting nicotine and reports back with the statistics. The student explained further, “What the button does on VapeMate is it intercepts the button that’s used on your vaping pen, so every time you click the button for your vaping men to inhale, it’s basically just clicking the button on VapeMate. So then it takes the data from how long the button is clicked and can tell how much nicotine is taken in, and then that is sent over to our app via Bluetooth.”

The teens received the highest honor at the competition. They’re hoping that one day their product will make a difference.

One of the students said, “I think through our product, we can bring awareness to this product and make people realize truly how damaging vaping is.”

The students won an all-expense paid trip to Italy to speak with officials about funding for their project.
