The set is an interesting combination of model and board game.

On Tuesday, March 10, popularly recognized as “Mario Day” for the day’s similarity to the name of Nintendo’s mascot Mario, Lego teased the announcement of their very first Mario-themed building set. This morning, they released an official trailer for the set, and it’s quite a departure from their usual fare.

Owners of the set can build their own small Mario-themed “levels” on a table, recreating classic Mario set-pieces and filling it with his usual nemeses like Goombas and Koopa Troopas. The set comes with a special Mario figure that features screens on its eyes, mouth, and chest, as well as speakers to deliver classic Mario hoots and hollers. The figure features Bluetooth connectivity; a player picks it up, pushes the Bluetooth button to start the game, and the figure can detect when it stomps enemies, falls into hazards, or reaches the goal flag. The general idea is for a player to assemble a level themselves, then guide the figure through it by hand. The chest display shows when the player obtains coins from stomping enemies and opening boxes, and the mouth and eye screens show Mario’s emotions.

Takashi Tezuka, executive officer and game producer at Nintendo, is quite excited about the set. “I have always liked LEGO products and how they help children use their imagination to play,” he said in a press release. “The new product we created together with the LEGO Group seeks to combine two different styles of play — one where you freely build the world of Mario and the other where you play with Mario in the very world that you have created.”

No word yet on a price point, but the set is supposed to release some time later this year.
