Spring Training has also been cancelled.

As a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the United States Major League of Baseball has announced that not only will the remaining Spring Training games be cancelled, but the new season’s official opening day would be delayed by at least two weeks.

The announcement came yesterday after a prolonged meeting between all 30 baseball clubs and the MLB Players Association. Opening day was originally scheduled for March 26, but the MLB decided they would need to postpone the season.

The official statement from the League is that action “is being taken in the interests of the safety and well-being of our players, Clubs and our millions of loyal fans.”

The League plans to monitor the status of the coronavirus as time passes and adjust their projections accordingly. They are hoping to announce a new schedule soon, but also said that they “will remain flexible as events warrant, with the hope of resuming normal operations as soon as possible.”

Players are disappointed by the delay, but have been understanding of the circumstances. “We want to go out there and we want to play, but at the same time, lives are at risk and looking at the bigger picture, we need to stay clear of everyone out there because this is just how crazy this thing is,” said Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier. “I don’t have a whole lot of education on it, I just know that it’s nothing to joke around with and I think that’s pretty safe to say. Never thought anything like this would ever happen, but once again, we have to adapt to what we’re asked of and try to do each and every thing possible to look out for ourselves, our families, the people around us that we’re keeping contact with until this slows down and hopefully that’s sooner than later.”
