The person responsible for making a threat is now in custody.

As tens of thousands stream down to the festival grounds, they can go through the entry gates with confidence that they’ll be safe at Mexican Fiesta in Milwaukee. The celebration will go uninterrupted this weekend at Mexican Fiesta with the possibility of a threat gone.

“It’s very sad for a young man, 19 years old. I think nowadays it’s so easy to play pranks because that really is probably what it was. There was no weapons when he was arrested, so there was no real threat,” said Mexican Fiesta Board Member Tamara Olivas.

They always take any threat seriously, but just weeks after a shooter in El Paso told police he was targeting Mexicans, this threat put everyone on high alert.

“We got calls all week long about, ‘Should we come to Mexican Fiesta?’ And for us it was like, ‘Yes, we’re going to do everything possible to make this a safe event,'” said Mexican Fiesta president Ruben Burgos.

Burgos is a retired police officer and says he plans to have more resources from MPD and volunteer officers for everyone to feel safe.

“Now with this arrest, it should relieve everybody’s tensions,” said Burgos.

“If any place is going to be safe this weekend, it’s going to be Mexican Fiesta,” said Olivas.

Last year, the festival drew more than 80,000 people to celebrate Mexican culture, and they’re not going to let anybody stop them from doing that.

Burgos says cancelling the festival would never be an option.

“We’re not going to bow to fear, not to terrorists or anything like that. We’re going to continue to do the best we can,” said Burgos.

In 46 years, they say they’ve never had any incidents happen at Mexican Fiesta and they’re confident that streak will continue this year.
