New construction plans are in the works for West Mifflin after a water main break occurred Thursday.

While it may look like the roads are mostly fixed, looks can be deceiving. The section of road where a water main break occurred is now two different shades. But now, that stretch of road is going to have to be closed again. Starting Monday, they will dig up and re-pour new concrete.

Orange cones and hardhats are almost as Pittsburgh as water main breaks.

“We’re kind of used to being inconvenienced on 51. There is always some kind of water main break,” said one local traveler.

Early Friday, crews fixed the northbound stretch of Route 51. Two trucks blocked drivers with big signs telling everyone to detour, back towards the old Century III Mall and hop back onto 51 just between Denny’s and Red Lobster.

“I had no idea until I drove down this way and then there was all the construction,” said a local driver.

The pair of Thursday morning breaks in West Mifflin buckled the road and dried up the faucets at 11 businesses and 33 homes nearby.

“Yeah, get it fixed. Because it can be a headache, you know? So, traffic, traffic, traffic,” said another local driver.

West Mifflin Police tell KDKA that the contractors requested officers’ help next week with plans to continue work on this stretch again. Many drivers have expressed their disappointment with this inconvenience.

That lane closure is in each direction. One northbound lane and one southbound lane will be closed Monday, and that work will last several weeks. The workers will be out from 7 AM to 4 PM.
