The state is looking to alleviate rising fuel prices.

Gasoline prices are still on the rise around the United States, with per gallon costs reaching as high as $4 or $5. While still not quite as high as prices reached during the 2008 recession, this is an all-time high for gas prices in general, and local lawmakers are mulling over ways to reduce their impact on the citizenry.

New York has decided to follow Connecticut’s example in temporarily suspending their state gas tax. Earlier this year, Connecticut suspended their 25-cent-per-gallon gas tax, and now New York is suspending their own 16-cent-per-gallon gas tax. This will hopefully bring prices in the state down from their current average of $4.93 per gallon, especially since some districts of New York have their own independent gas taxes that are also being suspended or capped.

“Nobody expected gas to be $4 or $5 a gallon when we were budgeting,” said Rockland County Executive Ed Day to ABC7 New York, whose jurisdiction is temporarily capping the local gas tax at $2 a gallon. “Gas was $2 a gallon, so we said, ‘Okay, that’s what the budget is, that’s what we’re going to stay within. We’ll return the rest to the people.'”

Calls have been coming in to suspended the national gas tax as well, though lawmakers have been reluctant to do so, as they cannot guarantee the savings will actually be passed onto the populace rather than the oil companies themselves.
