Defense Department officials have drafted plans to keep her safe on her Asian tour.

Today, United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi began her tour of various Asian countries and territories, starting with a trip to Singapore. However, a controversial aspect of this tour is a potential trip to Taiwan. While the locale isn’t on Pelosi’s official itinerary, Taiwanese officials have confirmed that she is planning on spending a night there.

As Taiwan’s independence is still a major point of contention for China, Chinese officials have warned that a visit to Taiwan from Pelosi would be viewed as politically hostile.

“We would like to tell the US once again that China is standing by, and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army will never sit idly by. China will take resolute responses and strong countermeasures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters.

“As for what measures, if she dares to go, then let’s wait and see,” Zhao added.

In response to the warnings, the Biden Administration promised to protect Pelosi on her trip, assuring that nothing she’s doing should be viewed as hostile in any way.

“We want to make sure that when she travels overseas, she can do so safely and securely and we’re going to make sure of that. There is no reason for the Chinese rhetoric. There is no reason for any actions to be taken. It is not uncommon for congressional leaders to travel to Taiwan,” National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby told CNN.

“We shouldn’t be as a country – we shouldn’t be intimidated by that rhetoric or those potential actions. This is an important trip for the speaker to be on and we’re going to do whatever we can to support her,” Kirby added.
