Adults over 21 can now purchase marijuana products for recreational use.

Last week, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced that the state government had successfully charted a path for the legalization of recreational marijuana sales and usage. This morning, after a successful approval vote, that legalization officially went into effect, with customers lining up at the various alternative treatment centers around the state that have received the official go-ahead. With this legalization, New Jersey is now the 18th United State to legalize recreational marijuana usage, as well as the 37th state to legalize medical usage.

“It’s a huge event. It’s a moment in time in American history where prohibition 2.0 is lifted,” said Green Thumb Industries CEO Ben Kovler in a statement.

“We have been working with our community partners to make sure we mitigate lines, that we mitigate traffic and that our staff is trained and how to make sure they are checking IDs 21 and up and make sure we have all the products ready to go,” Colombia Care executive Adam Goers told CBS Philadelphia.

The sales of marijuana and marijuana products are starting relatively small, with purchases limited to 1 ounce of cannabis per person, whether in dried form or in certain edibles like gummies. Perishable edibles like brownies are not currently permitted for sale. Dispensaries are also required to maintain proper social equity, presenting themselves and their products with professional standards.
