One of Detroit’s most iconic venues is getting a new name.

The Cobo center has been under fire in recent years. Some have called its namesake, Albert Cobo, a racist for policies he enacted while mayor.

Chemical Bank now owns the naming rights, having purchased it for $33 million. Now, there is a black tarp where the Cobo Center name used to be displayed. This morning, there will be a new name and a new display. That $33 million deal includes the rights to the name for the next 22 years. That math equates to $1.5 million annually.

Since the original announcement in February, Chemical Bank has merged with TCF Bank. During that time, bank leaders say if the deal went down, the downtown convention center would be renamed TCF Center. When it was announced that the Cobo Center would be no more, Mayor Mike Duggan said he was all on board, citing racist policies made by the former mayor, Albert Cobo.

“The Cobo era was marked by the wiping out of African American neighborhoods in the name of urban renewal. It was an era that displaced African American families in a way that was discriminatory and callous,” said Mayor Mike Duggan.

The new name will be unveiled this morning at 10 AM A massive block party will take place at 11:30 AM Bus fares are free if you want to head downtown. TCF Bank will pick up the charge.
