Streaming players and smart TVs were completely frozen.

Last night, numerous users of Roku-branded devices around the United States, including streaming players and smart TVs, both Roku-branded and with Roku integration, experienced a near complete interruption of service. All of the affected devices were either completely frozen on a loading screen, or stuck in a loop of powering on and off again.

Social media platforms like Reddit and Twitter were flooded with complaints from users. Eventually, Roku posted an official acknowledgement of the problem at about 8:30 PM eastern time. “Roku is aware of an issue reported by users who are unable to access some Roku services,” the company said. “If you are trying to activate your device, please try again later. Our priority is to get this resolved as soon as possible, and we ask that you bear with us as we manage this issue.”

Perhaps more concerning than the freezing of Roku devices is the fact that some users were completely locked out of their TVs and any other devices connected to them. Multiple users reported being unable to watch cable, play video games, or use DVD players connected to a Roku smart TV due to being unable to escape the frozen loading screen or reboot loop.

Regular service was eventually restored overnight, though some users managed to find workarounds in the interim.
