Hollywood award season marches on with another major bellwether for the Oscars. The Screen Actors Guild, or SAG, Awards were handed out on Sunday night. Unlike other similar awards, the SAGs are awarded to actors by other actors. Though the Oscars continue to be considered the biggest honor in film making, there is a special type of honor to being recognized by your own peers.

This year, ‘Black Panther’ won the biggest award for film with the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast. This is the first time a comic book movie has won the award; though it wasn’t necessarily a surprise, it’s still a major achievement. The two biggest awards for individual actors went to Rami Malek for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and Glenn Close for ‘The Wife.’

On the TV side, the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Drama Series went to ‘This is Us,’ with the comedy award going to ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.’ Maisel also won both awards for individual actors in a comedy for Rachel Brosnahan and Tony Shalhoub, playing a daughter and father combo.

After many nominations for comedic roles, Jason Bateman’s role in the drama series ‘Ozark’ finally landed him his statue. The SAGs took the lead of the Golden Globes and awarded Sandra Oh the best actress in a drama for her much-lauded performance in ‘Killing Eve.’

In another repeat win, Darren Criss won best actor in a mini-series for ‘American Crime Story: the Assassination of Gianna Versace,’ portraying serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

The awards are also notable for passing up early awards season favorite ‘A Star is Born’ for the major categories. Will Oscar keep up the pattern?
