Authorities are seeking information on the Rust set shooting.

It has been nearly two months since the death of Halyna Hutchins, cinematographer for the in-progress film Rust. In October, Hutchins was killed when a pistol being used as a prop by actor Alec Baldwin accidentally discharged. For reasons that still have not been made clear, the pistol had been loaded with live ammunition instead of prop ammunition or blanks. Investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department is still ongoing, and their latest pursuit is Baldwin’s cell phone.

The Sheriff’s Department has issued a search warrant for Baldwin’s cell phone. According to an affidavit filed by the Department in the Santa Fe Magistrate Court, investigators require the phone “to search for any evidence” of any possible links or explanations of Hutchins’ death and/or the events leading up to it. A representative of the Department believes that there “may be evidence on the phone, due to individuals using cellular phones during and /or after the commission of crime(s).”

The warrant was originally suggested by Baldwin’s civil attorney, Aaron Dyer. While Baldwin’s council is willing to provide the phone, they stressed the importance of following proper protocols so as not to needlessly implicate Baldwin or impact his family. “We proactively requested that the authorities obtain a warrant so that we could take steps to protect Mr. Baldwin’s family and personal information that is clearly unrelated to the investigation,” Dyer said in a statement. “A phone contains a person’s entire life, and personal information needs to be protected. While they evaluate the phone information, we hope that the authorities continue to focus on how the live rounds got on the set in the first place.”
