A 13-year-old boy became trapped in the sand on Golden Beach after a hole he and his friends dug caved in on him.

The young boy now has his grandfather to thank for saving his life.

“I collapsed after I got him out,” said the boy’s grandfather John Lasry. “I broke down, I cried.”

Around 8:30 PM, Lasry heard his grandson’s friends screaming for his help. They were on the beach in the back of his home on Golden Beach digging a hole.

“The kids came screaming and saying Benjamin was drowning and he cannot breathe, so I ran out,” said Lasry.

“We dug and dug and I didn’t know where my grandson was and finally we could feel his back and his head and continued digging and he could stand up.” Lasry explained that like most humans, it was his grandson’s natural reflex to crouch and release some air so he could have some distance between the sand and his head.

Once he got Benjamin out up to his waist, he let the fire department do the rest.

Lasry’s message for parents is, “be very tough with your kids.”

Lasry says his grandson and his friends will be back today to fill in the hole to ensure this never happens again.
