Today the trial begins for the man who shot an off-duty Tempe fire captain.

34-year-old Kyle Brayer was the fire captain and a Marine vet who was shot to death in Old Town Scottsdale in February of last year. The man accused of killing him is Hezron Parks, who faces second-degree murder.

Police say Brayer was in the back of a golf cart with others on Civic Center Plaza near Stetson. Parks was allegedly driving behind him when he began bumping the golf cart. That’s when Brayer got out of the car to approach him and Parks shot him in the head.

A woman who had mutual friends with Brayer was also riding in that golf cart with him when the shooting happened.

She described the incident as it happened that night: “The only reason why they said anything to the guy was because he was charging at the car. They were like ‘what are you doing? There are girls on here, we’re not trying to cause any trouble.’ I could tell that Kyle put his hands up because I know that Kyle saw the gun at the last second.”

Brayer’s death prompted an outpouring of support from the entire community.
