The bill makes abortion a felony in all but the most dire of cases.

Alabama has passed the most restrictive abortion bill in the country, which bans abortion from the moment of conception. The bill was voted on by a vote of 25-6, but it still needs the governor’s final sign-off of approval before it becomes law.

Republican Governor Kay Ivey has not taken a public stance on the bill, but does align herself as being anti-abortion.

Here are the quick facts about the bill:
-Abortion will only be legal if a pregnant woman’s life or health is at risk
-Rape and incest cases are not exempt
-Abortion will be made a felony
-Doctors will face 99 years in prison if they perform an abortion

It’s no secret that Republican lawmakers want to see Roe v. Wade overturned; this bill is a step in that direction.

Politicians who vehemently opposed the bill, like Alabama State Senator Linda Coleman-Madison, voiced their outrage: “Republicans, you used to say ‘We want the government out of life. We want them out of our bedroom.’ Now you’re in my womb! You don’t control this. You don’t own this.”

Governor Ivey will have six days to sign the legislation, which is expected to happen.

Abortion supporters like the ACLU and the nation’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, say they will challenge the bill in court within a few weeks, should it become law.
