Your sunscreen may not be protecting you as much as you think.

A report by a consumer group says most sunscreens would actually fail FDA safety tests. This not only has the potential to have an effect on our health, but also the environment.

The report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) says that more than 60 percent of the products they tested do not actually provide adequate protection from the sun. Not only that, but many sunscreen products contain some potentially harmful chemicals like oxybenzone. Oxybenzone is used as a photostabilizer in other products, too, like nail polish, hairspray, fragrances, and cosmetics.

Oxybenzone is found in the majority of sunscreens available on the market today. Although it’s one of the active key ingredients in sunscreen, it’s been linked to damaging coral reefs and marine life. It’s also the most studied chemical in sunscreen. In terms of health hazards, oxybenzone has been linked to lower testosterone levels in young boys, shorter pregnancies, and hormone changes in men.

The EWG says it analyzed more than 1,300 products that contain SPF, but that number is only a fraction of the sunscreen products sold in the US.

Despite the EWG report, the FDA has not blatantly stated that oxybenzone and other chemicals can cause health or safety issues.

The EWG has reported similar results in the past, but this year, the sunscreen products were judged using FDA safety guidelines proposed back in February. Check out Fox4Now to review a list of those guidelines.

Despite the recent findings, it should be noted that the FDA, American Cancer Society, and the EWG still recommend using sunscreen properly.
