Burke is being faced with a long list of crimes.

Chicago’s first woman mayor Lori Lightfoot has called for the resignation of Alderman Burke after his racketeering, bribery and attempted extortion charges came to light. Lightfoot says that because of these corruption charges, Burke no longer has what she calls “the moral authority to serve”.

The indictment charges are connected to Burke trying down to shake down the developers of the old post office renovation project and a Chinese businessman looking for a sign permit, all in exchange for hiring Burke’s law firm for tax work. Burke allegedly also threatened to block an admission fee hike for the Field Museum unless they hired the daughter of a personal friend.

Burke’s attorney issued a statement denying these new federal charges. These indictments came five months after the 14th ward alderman was hit with other federal charges, alleging he used his office and power to extort private legal work for his law firm.

“Allegations spanning multiple years, identifying multiple schemes and suggest a standard course of dealing that is absolutely repugnant,” said Lightfoot. “I believe he has forfeited the moral authority and the privilege he needs continue as alderman of the 14th ward, and for these reasons I am calling on him to resign.”

Mayor Lightfoot says she has ordered her council to investigate any current city employees who may have cooperated with Burke and these alleged schemes.
