Prime subscribers will receive a year of Grubhub Plus.

Since the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic has eased, many food delivery services that were flourishing in quarantine times have found themselves with a sudden lack of new business. Services like Grubhub, Doordash, and Uber Eats have been missing earnings targets without the boost brought about by self-isolating customers. These companies have been searching for their own ways to make up the difference, but for Grubhub, the solution comes in a new partnership.

Grubhub announced today that they’re going into a joint venture with Amazon to offer a year of complementary Grubhub Plus service to all Amazon Prime subscribers. Grubhub Plus is the company’s premium subscription service that waives delivery fees for all orders above a certain cost from participating restaurants. Once the complementary year ends, users will be charged the regular $9.99 monthly to continue using the service.

“Amazon has redefined convenience with Prime and we’re confident this offering will expose many new diners to the value of Grubhub Plus while driving more business to our restaurant partners and drivers,” Grubhub CEO Adam DeWitt said in a statement.

Grubhub is hoping to receive a fresh influx of both orders and higher-value subscribers from this partnership. Amazon, meanwhile, is receiving a 2% stake in the company, which could mature to a 15% stake if the partnership goes well. In addition to being beneficial for Grubhub, this partnership could also help Amazon regain the footing in the delivery industry it lost when Amazon Restaurants was discontinued back in 2019.
