Johnson is also resigning as leader of the UK’s conservative party.

In recent years, United Kingdom Prime Minister and leader of the country’s conservative party, Boris Johnson, has been beset by almost non-stop controversy. These controversies include, but are not limited to, violating his own COVID-19 lockdown policies, sexual misconduct allegations, and unsanctioned governmental shutdowns. After spending so long weathering scandal after scandal, it seems Johnson has finally had enough.

This morning, Johnson announced that he is officially resigning as both head of the conservative party and Prime Minister following multiple other resignations within the party. “In the past few weeks, I have been trying to convince my colleagues it would be eccentric to change governments when we have achieved so much,” Johnson said. “I regret not to be successful in those arguments and, of course, it’s painful not to be able to see through those projects myself.”

Johnson plans to remain the acting Prime Minister until an official successor can be decided upon. Johnson is the third British Prime Minister in a row to resign before the end of his term.

Johnson’s political opponents have already opposed the notion of Johnson remaining the acting Prime Minister, firm in their assertions that he needs to leave right away.

“For the overall wellbeing of the country, Mr. Johnson should not remain in Downing Street,” former Prime Minister John Major wrote in a letter.

“He needs to go completely. None of this nonsense about clinging on for a few months. He inflicted lies, fraud and chaos in the country. We are stuck with a government which isn’t functioning in the middle of the cost of living crisis,” Labour Party leader Keir Starmer told Sky News.
