If you don’t know, having an item on layaway can mean two different things: first, it can mean putting down a deposit on something you want to purchase in order to ensure that it’s there when you need it. Second, and more relevant to this story, it can mean paying installments on an item gradually adding up to its total amount. This exists for people who can’t afford to spend the entirety of something all at once. Though, as is the case with any kind of installment-based payment plan, it can be kind of stressful to have those costs in the back of your head. For his Christmas good deed, one anonymous man did away with all that.

At a Walmart in Derby, Vermont, customers with items on layaway were surprised when they discovered that someone had completely paid all of their items off. One woman, a miss Julie Gates of Eden Mills, actually had a chance to speak with the mystery man, asking him who could afford to pay everyone’s layaway. The man simply responded “Santa Claus can.”

The Walmart wouldn’t disclose exactly how much was spent, but assuming it was all for Christmas presents, it likely wasn’t an insignificant amount. Merry Christmas, mystery Santa.
