In what has become a tradition of sorts for films based in the ‘Harry Potter’ universe, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ completely crushed its opening weekend box office.

The film has grossed $62.2 million in domestic profits as well as $191 million in international profits. That’s a tidy $253.2 million in its first weekend alone. Though, despite beating out all other films this weekend, ‘Crimes of Grindelwald’ is actually the worst performing movie in the entire ‘Harry Potter’ cinematic universe.

Even the film’s predecessor, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,’ scored at least $12 million higher on its debut. It’s kind of funny how, despite being the highest-grossing movie its opening weekend, it’s still considered a “bad” movie within its own series. Life is funny like that.

Trailing behind ‘Crimes of Grindelwald’ is ‘The Grinch,’ which was no slouch in its own right, raking in $38 million at its debut (though, like ‘Crimes of Grindelwald,’ has been met with mostly tepid critical reception). In third place is the Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ which is still going relatively strong a few weeks out from its debut, though its per-screen average is starting to drop.
