Little A’Deja can finally hear her mother’s voice.

A’Deja Rivers is almost two years old. She’s been deaf since birth. Her father and sister are also hearing impaired.

But thanks to cochlear implants, which are so advanced now they can link to Bluetooth, A’Deja can hear for the very first time.

Her mom, Patricia, says she couldn’t sleep the night before.

“I was up like ‘is it time yet? No not yet! Is it time yet? No not yet!'” Patricia said, laughing.

Johns Hopkins All Children’s Audiologist Shelley Ash says the moment when a child gets to hear for the very first time in their life never gets old.

“When we first start out, we’re introducing very soft levels of electrical current and it just sounds to her like ‘beep beep beep'”,” said Ash.

But soon enough, the big moment came when A’Deja got the chance to hear her mother and grandmother’s voices for the first time.

“Hi! I love you,” they both told her.

Because A’Deja got her Cochlear implants early, her language development will only be slightly delayed.

Her father, Robert, said this is a very special day. He used sign language to tell a news crew how great he felt about the experience.
