People in Highlands County aren’t taking any chances with Hurricane Dorian.

Shelters are already open and occupied as the storm continues on its path. In Sebring, one of four shelters that are in full operation opened around noon yesterday. Another one of those shelters in Highlands County caters to those with special needs.

As of this morning, about 40,000 sandbags have been filled and distributed to those in the community. People have been seen boarding up their homes because of the water. Flooding is the major concern, especially because there are areas that are already prone to flooding. With more rain expected today and later this evening, that could be detrimental to those living in low-lying areas.

“We have a few rural areas that are already having some flooding concerns on some of the drainage canals and in their lands and properties, and so that’s a definite concern for us,” said Highlands County Emergency Manager LaTosha Reiss.

A voluntary evacuation is in order for those living in low-lying areas, mobile homes or RV parks.
