As Hurricane Dorian begins its March up the southeast coast today, it’s already had a major impact on flights.

More than 1,700 flights have been cancelled, so if you’re flying out of Sky Harbor International Airport this morning – it could mean trouble for you.

Today was supposed to be one of the biggest travel days right after Labor Day weekend, but Sky Harbor boards are showing several cancellations.

While flight cancellation is occurring, some people may be confused by the “on time” statuses shown on the flight boards. For instance, there are several flights to Orlando that are marked as “on time,” but it’s because all of the flights are connecting. While the initial flight to the connecting city is on time, but those connecting flights will not be flying to Orlando because that airport is closed because of Dorian.

Dorian is having major impacts on airlines across the U.S. Just today, airlines have canceled more than 1,400 flights today on top of the 1,500 flights canceled yesterday. Florida airports remain the hardest hit according to the flight tracking service FlightAware. Orlando International Airport is closed all day today, which will inevitably impact hundreds of flights in and out of there, as well as connecting flights.

Some airlines are offering lower capped prices on flights out of Florida. Some are waving baggage and pet fees. Some are also allowing travelers to cancel and reschedule flights without any penalty.

If you have any travel plans in or out of Sky Harbor, airlines urges you to check with them to see if your flight plans have been altered, rerouted, or delayed.
