Gyms, restaurants, and more will begin requiring vaccination to enter.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today that all city restaurants, fitness centers, and indoor entertainment businesses such as movie theaters and concert venues would begin screening for proof of vaccination among entrants. Broadway theaters in particular, which have suffered extremely staggered reopening procedures, will be requiring full vaccination verification through the end of October at the minimum. Anyone who is not able to present proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 via a CDC vaccination card will not be permitted to enter these businesses. This new policy, named the “Key to NYC Pass,” will be gradually rolled out across the city over the next few weeks.

“If you’re unvaccinated, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate in many things,” de Blasio said. “If you want to participate in our society fully, you’ve got to get vaccinated.”

Many businesses, even in states where local governments are coming out against masking and vaccination mandates, have been enacting private requirements on employees and customers to mask up and/or get vaccinated. New York City, however, is one of the first major metropolitan cities to enact such a mandate wide-scale.

“When you hear those words, I want you to imagine the notion that, because someone’s vaccinated, they can do all the amazing things that are available in this city,” de Blasio said of the Key to NYC Pass.

“The only reason we’re having this recovery is vaccination,” de Blasio said. “So it’s time. And this is going to send that message clearly.”
