It’s like a block party, but bigger.

Coming this Saturday, you’ll be able to walk or bike down the street in downtown Pittsburgh without worrying about traffic mowing you down. That’s the entire concept of “Open Streets Pittsburgh.” For one day each month, roads are shut down to motor vehicles so people can enjoy an active day with other members of their community – especially as the weather gets warmer.

Open Street Pittsburgh will take up 4.4 miles of open streets, leaving plenty of room for people to walk, bike, run, scooter, or really do whatever you want.

Alex Shewczyk of Bike Pittsburgh says this year, there are a lot of new activities for families to enjoy: “We have a brand new Bike Pittsburgh East Liberty kids hub. We’ll have a learn-to-ride section, an obstacle course, and family-friendly classes provided by the YMCA of Pittsburgh.”

Shewczyk recommends that once people arrive, they should explore the streets and support their local vendors. Some of those vendors include East End Food Co-Op and Millie’s Homemade Ice Cream. If you visit OpenStreetsPGH.org, you’ll see a variety of volunteer opportunities coming up, especially for June and July.

Shewczyk says one of the best parts of this event is seeing kids who are learning how to ride their bikes for the first time.

For the last Sunday of June, they’ll be going through Lawrenceville, and for the last Sunday in July, they’ll be going through the Armstrong Tunnels.

Don’t forget to save the date – May 25.
