Do you find yourself straining your eyes in order to see what’s on your mobile phone screen? Do you find yourself turning into a hunchback as you bend your neck to peer at the small screen? Do you find yourself with $2,000 you just don’t want in your bank account anymore?

Samsung has unveiled the next big thing in smartphones: folding. It’s been talked about for some time now as an innovation that was sure to be coming around the bend, but it’s taken until now for a major mobile phone manufacturer to come out with a commercial model. Samsung has won the race with their new Galaxy Fold smartphone, coming in at a painful $1,980 for the base model.

The idea is that it will serve as a phone with a screen size similar to many current smartphones, but then it will unfold to create a tablet from a screen that was folded inside. The tablet is 7+ inches, which is a decent size for a tablet without being too overwhelmingly huge.

It’s a cool idea and will perhaps catch on down the road. But it doesn’t seem likely that too many people will find it useful enough to drop $2,000. Then again, mobile phone service companies have a way of making us rationalize a large expense when they split it into monthly payments over two years.
