The technology has been designed so that international flights can help navigate customs.

How it works is your photo will be taken and then that photo will be used with the photo on your travel documentation (e.g. a passport). Those two pictures will then be “matched” together. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, this allows lines to flow quicker and more smoothly. They say this will strengthen national security by reducing the risk that an impostor will use a travel document that doesn’t belong to them.

Despite the new technology, anyone is free to decline having their photo taken. Within the past year, Delta Airlines introduced facial recognition at all gates at the airport. The airline says it helped travelers check their bags and get through security more quickly.

Some people have mixed reactions in regards to the new technology.

“I have no problem as long as it speeds up the lines and gets us through quicker and safer,” said one traveler.

“It’s a necessary ‘evil’ if I can use that word, but we’ve just got to make sure there’s constraints so you’re not violating other folks’ privacy and what have you,” said another traveler.

The photo is for a one-time travel use, so after 12 hours, your photo will be deleted.
