The TSA will also be making its screening procedures less invasive.

In honor of the Transgender Day of Visibility, the Biden Administration has been advocating new policies and changes that are generally more supportive of the United States’ LGBTQ+ community. One of these changes will tweak the issuing of passports to United States citizens. Specifically, starting April 11, those who identify as nonbinary or otherwise non-conforming to the typical gender binary will be able to select an “X” for the gender listed on their passport.

“For far too long, transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming Americans have faced significant barriers to traveling safely and many have not had their gender identity respected as they travel within the United States and around the world,” the White House wrote in its statement.

“DHS is committed to protecting the traveling public while ensuring that everyone, regardless of gender identity, is treated with respect,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas added to the statement.

In conjunction with this change, the Transportation Security Administration is taking steps to make their screening processes less invasive and gender-dependent. In addition to accepting the X gender mark on passports and other travel documentation, the TSA is slated to employ new scanner technology that will replace the existing gendered systems.
