Critics weren’t impressed with Jared Leto’s newest performance.

Today is the theatrical premier of Morbius, the newest film from Sony to make use of the expanded Spider-Man universe outside of the established canon outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking place in the same continuity as the Venom films. The film stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, a man with a rare blood disease who finds himself transformed into a vampire-like creature following a treatment attempt and combats with an insatiable hunger for human blood.

Unfortunately, unlike the Spider-Man films, it seems early critic screenings have not yielded many positive opinions. At time of writing, Morbius maintains a 15% critical score on film review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes, with multiple critics calling it “flat,” “forgettable,” and “cut-down.”

“Morbius is a perfunctory, sloppy, paint-by-numbers attempt to remind audiences that Sony has the rights to these Spider-Man villains and by golly they’re going to use them,” writes Nerdist reviewer Kyle Anderson.

“Perhaps, the speedy pacing is to make up for the lack of verve of the cast, many of whom speak in a tired tone as if they’d been dragged out of bed right before shooting — or maybe the hope is that if the plot moves fast enough, you won’t have time to notice how achingly predictable every beat is, and how two-dimensional every character is,” writes Mashable reviewer Kristy Puchko, who called the film “totally skippable.”
