Griner has been returned to the US in a prisoner swap.

Back in February, around the time Russia first began its invasion of Ukraine, WNBA athlete Brittney Griner was detained for possession of cannabis in a Russian airport. Due to diplomacy stalls exacerbated by Russia’s invasion, she’s been in Russian custody for nearly the entire year. This week, however, a deal was finally struck to secure her safe passage home.

Griner was released from Russian custody in a prisoner swap deal between Russia and the United States. In exchange for Griner, Russia received Viktor Bout, an international arms dealer who was arrested in a sting operation in 2008 and sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. US President Joe Biden ordered Bout’s sentence cut short and his return to Russia to secure Griner’s safe passage home.

“Moments ago I spoke to Brittney Griner,” Biden wrote on his personal Twitter. “She is safe. She is on a plane. She is on her way home.” According to Biden, Griner is in good health and spirits, though she will be undergoing a medical evaluation upon her return to US soil to be safe.

Griner is not the only US national currently detained in Russia, however. Retired US Marine Paul Whelan has been in Russian custody for the past four years, convicted on heavily-contested espionage charges.

“We’ve not forgotten about Paul Whelan,” Biden promised, stressing that “we will never give up” on bringing him back to the US.
