The pieces have come together in this tragic crime.

The latest update from authorities in the tragic homicide case of five-year-old AJ Freund show what the turning point was that led to a murder confession from the boy’s father, Andrew Freund, Sr.

The night Freund died, his mother used Freund, Sr.’s cell phone to research how to conduct child CPR at 3:17 AM. That was on April 15. According to the official report, Freund had been forced to take a cold shower that night after soiling his clothes. He went to bed wet and naked, and later on his parents later found him dead. Freund was reported missing three days after this discovery.

When questioned, Freund Sr. reportedly told authorities that he stuffed his son’s body in a tote and stored it in the basement. He explained that he had put his son’s body in the back of his truck and buried it in an empty lot.

Freund’s body was found in a shallow grave, wrapped in plastic, on April 24, about 10 miles from the family’s home in Crystal Lake, Illinois. His parents, JoAnn Cunningham and Freund Sr., have been charged with first-degree murder. Weeks before his death, a video shot on Cunningham’s phone revealed Freund with bruises all over his face and body.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) paid 17 visits to the household since Freund’s birth. The agency released a timeline as a part of a review of its involvement in the AJ Freund case.

Four months before his murder, Freund told a doctor, “Maybe someone hit me with a belt. Maybe Mommy didn’t mean to hurt me.” This came after police found bruises on the boy’s hip following a hotline tip about the family.

The parents have another younger son. The Northwest Herald reports that the couple has agreed to terminate their parental rights and surrender him to the custody of DCFS.
