GOP leader Kevin McCarthy has attempted and failed 11 votes so far.

This week, following the departure of now-former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, the United States of House of Representatives is in the process of electing its new speaker. As the House is now GOP-controlled, the primary candidate is GOP leader Kevin McCarthy. However, after 11 failed attempts to garner votes for the position, McCarthy remains unelected, and the House is at a standstill.

Multiple prominent GOP members have taken hardline stances against McCarthy, remaining steadfastly opposed to his appointment even after multiple negotiation talks. “The main things we’re talking about are a conservative agenda around spending and the nature of our Republican majority,” North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry said. “That’s really the crux of the conversation. And that’s really the contours of it.”

As the process drags on, moderate Republicans are starting to grow weary and have begun considering other potential candidates. Controversial Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who on Thursday nominated former President Donald Trump for the speaker position, said that if a moderate Republican is elected to the position with the help of House Democrats, he would resign from his position.

“I assure you — that if Democrats joined up to elect a moderate Republican, I will resign from the House of Representatives. That is how certain I am. I can assure your viewers: that won’t happen,” Gaetz told Fox News.

The House is set to reconvene again at noon today, though the precise plans for today’s meeting are not known.
